Bret was born to Noah and Elizabeth Clark in the city of New Arrington. His mother was a healer, while his father was a soldier in the Endrian Army. Noah Clark was not a Mage, as he was not born with the gene that provides magical ability. They moved around a lot when Bret was young, due to being a military family, so thankfully they were no longer living in New Arrington when it was bombed in the Varidian invasion.
Bret’s parents began to fear that moving so often would affect Bret’s education, so they enrolled him in a private boarding school. Bret excelled in this studies at the school, becoming one of the top students. He loved it there, but things at home were not as happy. The Varidian invasion happened and Noah witnessed true horrors on the battlefield. He developed PTSD and started looking for a way out of the war. Noah’s marriage to Elizabeth became strained and they separated.
One day Noah showed up at Bret’s school and told him that he was leaving the Army and moving somewhere safe. He asked Bret to come with him, but when Bret learned that Noah didn’t intend to bring his wife, Bret refused. Noah then disappeared and was declared a deserter by the Army. Bret has never seen his father since, and has no idea if he’s even alive.
Elizabeth remarried to a man named Richard Cable, who adopted Bret. Bret happily took on his new last name, as he wanted to distance himself from the father he considered a coward. This led Bret to develop a deep dislike of giving up on anything, to the point of severe stubbornness.
The family finally settled down in the city of Doren, which was close to Bret’s school. Richard became a journalist for the newspaper there, as he was a non-Mage like Bret’s father. Elizabeth took on a job at the local hospital. Soon Bret graduated and went on to attend the Mage Academy, where he met Jake and became best friends. Jake was able to break Bret out of his shell and cure him of his shyness to the point that Bret tried his hand at dating. Bret, being stubborn, had a tendency to become stuck on a particular girl, even if she wasn’t interested. This both amused and annoyed Jake to no end.
Bret and Jake graduated at the same time, but Bret was ranked quite a bit higher than Jake was. Bret graduated second in his class, which still bothers him to this day, as he thought he could have been at the top. They only thing that held him back, was his weakness in the more scientific side of Elemental Magic. This weakness has been a bane to Bret for years.
The two of them decided to pursue a career in the Royal Guard (police) together after they graduated. Jake chose it for the excitement of the job, while Bret took it as he was more skilled at offensive spells than the technical side of Blue magic.
